Aluminium Study Featured on The New York Times - Green Blog

The New York Times featured a new study conducted by the University of Aachen for the European Aluminium Association in their influential Green Blog. The study shows that aluminum use in key automotive components can safely reduce vehicle weight by as much as 40 percent, compared to only 11 percent for high-strength steel. Reducing weight with automotive aluminium allows vehicles to increase safety, while providing environmentally-friendly increased performance.

Marcos Ramos of Alcoa to become new Chairman of EAA

 

MarcosRamosThe European Aluminium Association (EAA) is pleased to announce that Marcos R. Ramos of Alcoa is the new EAA Chairman. Mr. Ramos succeeds Alcoa’s Rudi Huber who has successfully led the organisation as of the start of Alcoa’s EAA chairmanship January 1st, 2009. The appointment of Marcos Ramos as the new EAA Chairman follows the retirement of Mr. Huber which was announced by Alcoa in March. Marcos Ramos, President of Alcoa’s European Region and Primary Products Europe, will take on his role as Chairman of the EAA as of June 1st 2010, until the end of Alcoa’s EAA Chairmanship on December 31st 2010.

Aluminium beverage can recycling in the EU 27 increases to 63%

 

The overall recycling rate for aluminium beverage cans in the enlarged EU 27 including EFTA countries and Turkey further improved in 2008 and stands now at 63.1%. It has improved from 61.8% in 2007, respectively 57.7% in 2006. This 5.4% increase over the past two years represents an impressive extra carbon footprint saving of more than 310,000 tons of CO2 equivalents.

Light weighting gaining ground in the institutional debate on green vehicles

 

The European Aluminium Association (EAA) welcomes the EU Competitiveness Council conclusions on clean and energy-efficient vehicles. These conclusions constitute a positive first step in the direction of technology neutrality, with the Council stressing the importance of considering a wide range of technologies, and stressing the need to explore the opportunities offered by weight reduction.

Making cars lighter - an essential contribution to the new European strategy on green vehicles

 

The European Aluminium Association (EAA) supports the European Commission’s new strategy on greener vehicles. This proposal does represent a step forward in the creation of a better regulatory and fiscal environment that will stimulate demand for low CO2 emitting cars. However, an integral part of this strategy should be the overall weight reduction of vehicles – one of the easiest and most cost effective measures that can be implemented immediately.  This has not yet been addressed comprehensively in the strategy and should be.

Aluminum provides superior life cycle emissions reductions and energy savings according to international research development body

 

According to a new study on the impact of steel, magnesium and aluminium front end parts on the energy use and CO2 emissions of passenger cars, aluminium was the environmental winner. Lifecycle analysis shows that an aluminium solution yields both a 20 percent energy and CO2 emissions reduction, compared to the traditional steel structure.

EAA official Build Up partner

 

build-up-logoIn January 2010, the Building Group of the European Aluminium Association - EAA joined the BUILD UP initiative as a Partner, following an invitation from the European Commission. Replacing the former EPBD Buildings Platform since 16 June 2009, www.buildup.eu is a new environment for building professionals, local authorities and building occupants willing to share their experience on how to cut energy consumption in buildings, said Andris Piebalgs, European Energy Commissioner.

Winners of the European Aluminium in Renovation Award 2009 unveiled at the European Parliament - Brussels

 

Isabelle Durant, vice-president of the European Parliament and co-president of Belgium's green party Ecolo, presented the winners of the second European Aluminium in Renovation Award 2009, in the European Parliament's Brussels premises.
