Since 1893, alumina has been produced from bauxite by a chemical process called the Bayer process.

Since 2001, the industry has been following its voluntary roadmap to streamline research into, and share best practices of, improving the environmental performance and resource utilisation of the alumina refining process. The collaborative efforts focus on the development of ever more efficient processes and possible alternatives, as well as on the treatment and re-use of process residues.
